Researching Composers

Music History Hall of Fame

Introduction:  History is the foundation on which our current musical styles are built.  By understanding the historical development of music, we are better able to appreciate the wealth of compositions available for our enjoyment.

Task:  The Music History Hall of Fame is currently developing its nomination list for inductees. You have been assigned the job of nominating a candidate for induction into the Hall of Fame.  It is your responsibility to nominate a composer from one of the periods of classical music history listed below.  Submit nominations in the form of a biographical sketch audio-visual presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint persuading voters to elect your candidate.

Assignment:  Using Microsoft PowerPoint, create a minimum of  six (6) slides:

bullet

1.) A title slide, which includes:
bullet

The name of the composer you have chosen

bullet

The musical era in which he/she lived

bullet

Your name & class period

bullet

2.) A biographical slide which includes a picture of your nominee
bullet

This is where you will introduce a little bit about your composer, such as his composition style

bullet

3.) A timeline slide which shows when in history your nominee lived
bullet

This is where you will tell about where and when your composer was born and died, his nationality, etc.

bullet

Give at least 3 interesting facts about your composer

bullet

4.) A slide containing some of the important musical works and contributions of your nominee
bullet

Name some of the compositions your composer wrote (at least 3)

bullet

5.) A concluding slide which should include persuasive information as to why your nominee should be included in the Hall of Fame
bullet

Tell why YOU think this person should be nominated

bullet

6.) A bibliography slide citing your sources
bullet

This slide tells your audience where you got your information

Click here for instructions on how to cite your sources.

Procedure

  1. Do all of your research first & write notes for each slide on the storyboard handout you are given (file to download is at the bottom of this Web page)

  2. Launch PowerPoint
  3. Save your presentation in a folder you create (name it Your Name) in the Music History folder in the My Documents folder (remember which computer you are sitting at so you will be able to work on your project the next time you come to the computer lab)
  4. Complete all the typing first (NO COPYING AND PASTING FROM THE INTERNET INTO YOUR PRESENTATION WILL BE ALLOWED)
  5. Spell check
  6. Save a picture of your composer in your folder in the Music History folder
  7. Insert the picture on your 2nd slide
  8. Apply a Design Template (You may need to adjust the position and/or size of text on the slides after you do this, so look through each slide carefully and make adjustments as necessary.)
  9. Create transitions between slides
  10. Create a self-running presentation with timings
  11. To add music to your presentation:
    1. Right-click the composition, choose Save Target As, and save it in your folder in the Music History folder

    2. Choose Insert/Movies and Sounds/Sound From File (locate the music file from your folder in the Music History folder)

    3. After inserting the music file into your presentation, drag the speaker icon off the slide into the gray area

    4. Right-click the icon and choose Custom Animation from the shortcut menu
    5. On the Multimedia Settings tab, choose Continue Slide Show and choose to Stop Playing after the number of slides in your presentation (click the up arrow to increase the number)
    6. Click OK

If you are unsure as to how to do each of the above steps, please refer to the PowerPoint Skills section below.

NOTE:  All media (pictures and music) to be inserted into your presentation must be saved in your folder in the Music History folder before inserting it into your presentation. (Failure to do this will result in your not being able to view the pictures and hear the music when you run the presentation on another computer.)

You are responsible for preparing and presenting the final nomination presentation.  Your music teacher will be grading your presentation, so do your best.
